Birchtree Parents Guild, the non-profit organization supporting Birchtree Charter School, will be hosting a:

 Waldorf-inspired Arts and Movement Summer Camp
 June 1-25, 2010



The camp will provide kids ages 3-14 with an opportunity to be creative, active, and to have fun! The days will be filled with games, movement, and a variety of artistic endeavors. Each session will have a theme that will guide the activities for the week.  The themes will be: Organic Gardening; Arts & Crafts; Alaskan Culture; and Circus Arts. Activities will vary based on age group. Sign up for one week, or all four! All sessions will end in a final demonstration that will allow campers to share what they have learned and accomplished with their families and communities.

Session themes:

Session 1 : Organic Gardening : June 1-4


Activities will include preparing and maintaining a garden bed, building a cob oven, flower pounding and making paper.

Session 2 : Arts & Crafts : June 7-11

Activities will include metal embossing, natural dyeing, felting, book binding and candle making.

Session 3 : Alaskan Culture : June 14-18

Activities will include making Alaskan yo-yos, learning about outdoor survival, dramatizing an Alaskan myth, meeting sled dogs, and participating in Alaskan games.

Session 4 : Circus Arts : June 21-25

Activities will include learning to juggle, tie dyeing t-shirts, playing string games, and putting on a circus.

Location:

The camp will be held weekdays between June 1st and June 25th. The camp for 7-14 year olds will be held from 9am - 4pm. The 3-6 year old camp will be a half-day from 9am-12pm or a full-day from 9am-4pm.

The camp will be at 4001 Darrington Village Avenue, right off Seldon Road in Wasilla, Ak.

   Session 1 : Gardening : June 1-4 ($75 / $150)
   Session 2 : Arts & Crafts : June 7-11 ($100 / $175)
   Session 3 : Alaskan Culture : June 14-18 ($100 / $175)
   Session 4 : Circus Arts : June 21-25 ($100 / $175)
 
7-14 year old sessions (9am-4pm):
   Session 1 : Gardening : June 1-4 ($150)
   Session 2 : Arts & Crafts : June 7-11  ($175)
   Session 3 : Alaskan Culture : June 14-18 ($175)
   Session 4 : Circus Arts : June 21-25 ($175)

Summer Camp Lead Teachers:

Donna Levesque will be the lead teacher for the 7-14 year old campers during all four sessions.  She is a certified teacher in the state of Alaska with over 25 years of teaching experience. She has been teaching in Waldorf schools for 13 years and has taught more than 20 summer camps.

Lori Berrigan will be leading the 3-6 year olds for all four camp sessions.  Lori is a graduate of Lifeways North America, a Waldorf Child Care and Human Development Training.  She has homeschooled using Waldorf methods for 5 years and is currently teaching a 1st/2nd grade combined Waldorf-inspired homeschool class.  She is also a founder of the Birchtree Parents Guild, which is the organization supporting the new Waldorf-inspired charter school in the Mat-Su Valley, Birchtree Charter School.

Scott “Mag” Hughes will teach the 7-14 year old group in the afternoons of the Circus Arts week.  He has taught and performed in the areas of juggling, circus arts, footbag, and flying disc in over 5000 schools throughout the United States, Europe, and Australia.   Mag is also the founder and director of WE CARE Sports, a company that specializes in alternative sports school assembly programs.  His motto is “THE MOST FUN WINS!”

Please send your kids to camp with sun screen, a change of clothing,  and a sack lunch. Dress ready to get messy!
